WARNING: spoilers for The Pitt season 2 episode 1 ahead.

January might be universally terrible, but at least we've got The Pitt season 2 to get us through it. New episodes of the HBO Max show are set during the Fourth of July weekend, 10 months after the events of season 1.

That might mean jean shorts and bikinis are out in abundance, but for the medical team at Pittsburgh's most chaotic emergency room, the weekend means an abundance of accidents and disasters. In season 2 episode 1, it's only 7am, so the start of their shift isn't even the eye of the storm.

Still, we've already got a lot to keep out eye on. Dr. Robby (Noah Wyle) is a lot more chilled after his emotional breakdown in season 1, planning to leave for a three-month sabbatical after the holiday shift is over. Then we've got the return of Dr Frank Langdon (Patrick Ball), who was put on temporary suspension in season 1 after stealing patient drugs to satiate his hidden addiction.

But it's Robby's replacement attending Dr. Al-Hashimi (Sepideh Moafi) who I think we need to keep a close eye on. She's entered the ER with an agenda, hoping to implement permanent changes to how Robby runs his department.

However, even though she's busy trying to assert her authority, we can already see a weakness developing – and it's got everything to do with the abandoned baby found in the waiting room toilet stall.

As The Pitt season 2 episode 1 progresses, the team finds an abandoned baby and brings it into the ER for checks while they try to figure out who it belongs to. From the get-go, Dr. Al-Hashimi takes a strange interest in the infant, insisting it goes through a laborious amount of extra tests to rule out any chances of fever of malnourishment.

Sure, you could say that she's merely a doctor at the top of her game doing the best job possible... but the faraway look in her eye tells us that she's hiding something. At the very least, it's triggering a wounded memory in her psyche, but I'm convinced she's linked to a patient in the waiting room who could well be the baby's mother.

During the episode, we get multiple cuts to patients waiting to be processed by the medical team, including the homeless man who everyone else feels rudely offended by. In the crowd is a young woman who looks incredibly healthy, but she's unaware that she's being called up to the desk by administration staff.

Why? Because she's deaf – we know this because the tumultuous noise of the ER pales into silence from her perspective. Given that we cut to her multiple times throughout the episode, she's got to be more important than the storyline is letting on.

This is the part where you need to indulge me. I'm proposing that our mystery patient is connected both to the abandoned baby and Dr. Al-Hashimi. There's enough physical resemblance between the two women for them to be related, and we know nothing about Dr. Al-Hashimi outside of her new role in the ER.

All I'm saying is it might be worthwhile keeping a close eye on this trio. We'll definitely be getting answers at some point... I've just got no idea when.
