Creating robust and professional online surveys is a cornerstone of effective data collection for researchers, businesses, and educators. While numerous online survey platforms exist, hosting your survey software offers unparalleled control over data privacy, customization, and branding.
Lime Survey is a powerful, open-source solution that empowers users to easily design, deploy, and analyze complex surveys. This article will help you through integrating Lime Survey onto your web-hosted site, specifically showing how to achieve this seamlessly with Hostinger, a popular and user-friendly hosting provider.
Lime Survey is an open-source online survey app that allows users to execute different survey operations. The open-source nature of the software will enable users and developers to access its code freely, while they can modify and distribute it.
Users have two options: self-hosting the Community Edition on their company servers for maximum control or using the Lime Survey Cloud service, which handles hosting and updates. The platform provides more than 30 different question types, advanced conditional logic for survey flow control, and customizable templates for branding consistency. It also supports extensive multilingual capabilities extending to more than 80 languages.
The platform provides complete participant management tools that allow users to distribute invitations and track participant progress. It also provides built-in data analysis tools with export functions that support Excel, SPSS, and R formats to simplify data management. The platform demonstrates strong GDPR compliance dedication, which strengthens its reliability and credibility.
Lime Survey functions as a flexible tool that serves various users, including individuals, businesses, academic institutions, and non-profits, for customer satisfaction research, market studies, academic data collection, and general data collection.
There are various options for creating online surveys for your company, including Survey Monkey and Typeform.

The Auto Installer tool eliminates the need for manual database creation and file uploads through automated technical procedures. This benefits both new users and those who want fast setup processes. Users can choose their desired app from a list before providing it.
The quickest way to get Lime Survey up and running is by using Hostinger’s Auto Installer tool. You can install it manually if your hosting platform doesn’t offer something like this. These steps are available on the Lime Survey website.
In the left-hand menu, go to Websites again and select Auto Installer.
A pop-up window will appear to configure your Lime Survey installation. To keep it separate from your main site, it’s recommended that you install Lime Survey in a subdirectory of your website (e.g., yourdomain.com/surveys).
During these next steps, you must assign a Website Title, Administrator Email, Administrator Username, and Administrator Password at the top of the pop-up window.
In the Enter Subdirectory box, type the name you want for your subdirectory (e.g., ls, surveys, limesurveys).
Important: Make sure "Create new database" is selected, and then assign a strong password for this new database.
To complete the setup process, you will need to go back to the Auto Installer page in Hostinger. Next to the Lime Survey, tap the icon on the right. From there, choose Manage.
Following this, you'll delve into the Global Settings, a central hub for customizing the behavior of your entire Lime Survey installation. Here, you'll configure essential aspects such as email settings for sending invitations and notifications, security settings like enabling HTTPS, and various interface settings to tailor the administrative look and feel.
Beyond global configurations, user management is another key area to address. This involves creating and managing additional administrator accounts, assigning specific permissions based on user roles, and organizing them into user groups for streamlined control.
Once these foundational elements are in place, you can create your first survey. This process begins with defining basic survey details such as the title, primary language, welcome and end messages, and general presentation options. With the established survey shell, you’ll then focus on designing the survey content by structuring questions into logical groups, adding diverse question types, and applying conditions using relevance equations to control question visibility. Finally, before launching, it's imperative to thoroughly preview your survey to ensure everything functions as intended before activating it to make it accessible to your target audience.
