The AI Doc: Or How I Became an Apocaloptimist – a new documentary featuring Open AI's Sam Altman – dares to question the ethics of artificial intelligence. It's just arrived in U. S. theaters. You can't stream it yet, and there's been no official word on when, but we expect to see it on Apple TV at some point later this year.

Director Daniel Roher, who describes himself as a “a pea-brain regular person”, sets out to understand the vast world of AI by speaking with some of its most influential figures.

He meets AI leaders, including Sam Altman, Dario Amodei, and Daniela Amodei, and asks them the simplest questions possible: What is AI? Why is it good? Why is it bad? How can we prepare for the AI-pocalypse?

The documentary is currently rated 87% on Rotten Tomatoes, with one critic calling it "the scariest film of the year."

What is the AI documentary The AI Doc: Or How I Became an Apocaloptimist about?

The documentary features conversations with leaders like Sam Altman, Dario Amodei, and Daniela Amodei, who discuss the rapid acceleration of AI and the global race to build systems that could surpass human intelligence. Some warn that, if unchecked, this could even risk the “abrupt extermination of humanity.”

At the same time, the film balances this existential risk with AI’s immense promise, from tackling climate change to curing diseases and expanding human capability. But as voices like Tristan Harris suggest, the outcome depends entirely on how responsibly the technology is developed and governed.

Ultimately, the film positions itself as more than just an explainer. It’s an urgent, nonpartisan call to action. In fact, it aspires to be an evergreen, definitive documentary that captures both the promise and peril of one of humanity’s most transformative technologies.
