The programs have seven National Championships between them, with UConn accounting for six of them. Having gone back-to-back in 2023 and 2024 – before running into eventual winners Florida early in last year's tournament – they're chasing sporting immortality. By contrast, the Wolverines last reached the March Madness final in 2018, but haven't won it since 1989.
They've swatted aside their opponents with ease, making history as the first team ever to win at least five March Madness ties by double-digits while pouring in at least 90 points per game, and Aday Mara is coming off a superb 26-point showing in the 91-73 beatdown of Arizona at the weekend.
The Huskies have had a tougher time of things, as demonstrated by their 19-point deficit to Duke at the Elite Eight stage, which means they should be hardened for battle. Before Tarris Reed Jr., who started out at Michigan, only two other players had ever racked up 100 points and 60 rebounds before the National Championship game.
The individual battles between Silas Demary Jr. and Lendeborg, Alex Karaban and Morez Johnson, and Reed and Mara will be fascinating, but the key to victory appears to lie in a bigger-picture tactical battle. Michigan's furious pace of play has left its opponents in a tailspin, but on the rare occasion they've been forced to play slow, they've struggled.
UConn are masters of game management, and they'll need to use all of their tricks at Lucas Oil Stadium.
