WARNING: spoilers for Marshals: A Yellowstone Story episode 1 ahead.

We're only one episode into the much-anticipated Taylor Sheridan spinoff Marshals: A Yellowstone Story, and it's already gone down with fans like a sack of spuds.

Picking up shortly after the main Yellowstone series, Kayce Dutton (Luke Grimes) is swapping Dutton Ranch life for an elite unit of the U. S. Marshals.

As Paramount puts it, "Kayce combines his skills as a cowboy and a Navy SEAL to bring justice to Montana. He and his teammates must balance family, duty, and the high psychological cost that comes with serving as the last line of defense in the region’s war on violence."

With episode 1 having aired on CBS and now available to stream on Paramount+, initial fan feedback has a different takeaway. Instead of the high-end Western drama we were promised, things felt more like "a predictable police procedural".

Has Marshals: A Yellowstone Story turned the Taylor Sheridan IP into a mundane CBS cop show?

Let's take a look at some of my favorite fan reactions to Marshals: A Yellowstone Story episode 1, shall we?

One X/Twitter user starts off strong, stating, "Well this the end of me watching Marshals Yellowstone! It’s awful.. no wonder it’s not on Paramount! Not even the same writer… I’m about to go to sleep it’s so boring."

Factually incorrect, as we know all 13 episodes will be streaming on Paramount+, but scathing all the same.

Our second user has more of a point. "Marshals Yellowstone spinoff: predictable modern formula cop show — boring like every other modern cop show! None of it real, none of it actual US Marshals procedure. Kayce instant Deputy badge— ZERO academy, ZERO background, ZERO vetting? Total fantasy! Rookie rifle kills day one?"

CBS does have a rich history of cop shows, with CSI, Criminal Minds, and NCIS just some of the titles to its credit. They're joined by newer series such as Fire Country, Tracker, and the new Matlock reboot, which all march to the tune of a similar drum.

The Madison trailer is Taylor Sheridan's Virgin River for Paramount+

The Madison: everything we know about Taylor Sheridan's new spinoff

In short, CBS knows how it wants to do its crime shows, and they clearly don't think there's any point changing a tried and tested blueprint that's getting results. Unfortunately, the side effect of Kayce leaving cowboy life behind is that his new one resembles something we already know all too well.

"Terrible show, bad acting, bad cast… This is what we get to replace Yellowstone? NO THANKS!" a third weighs in.

This comment highlights the biggest potential problem. If Marshals is too far removed from the Yellowstone world, will people continue to tune in?

With episodes airing weekly, only time will tell over the next 12 weeks. For the first time since the show was announced, I'm concerned.
