After an emphatically successful defence of her title 12 months ago, Sutume Kebede has returned to the streets of the Japanese capital to do it all over again. The Ethiopian broke the course record with a 2:15:55, but she's not the fastest in the field by a long chalk.
Brigid Kosgei is the former world record holder (2:14:04) and the 2022 Tokyo Marathon champion (2:16:02), but she's yet to win a World Marathon Major since. Aged 32, there's a growing sense that this could be a defining season for the Kenyan legend.
And reigning Chicago Marathon champion (2:14:57) Hawi Feysa and Rosemary Wanjiru, who's tasted victory in the 2023 Tokyo Marathon (2:16:28) and 2025 Berlin Marathon (2:21:05), aren't here to make up the numbers.
Reigning champion Tadese Takele (2:03:23) has been handed a double-boost, with the injury-enforced withdrawals of 2025 runner-up Timothy Kiplagat and 2024 Berlin champion Milkesa Mengesha. However, the Ethiopian is still one of seven contenders with sub-2:04 personal bests.
Included among them are Kenya's two-time Tokyo bronze medalist Vincent Kipkemoi, who's yet to win a WMM, and his compatriot Alexander Mutiso, the 2024 London winner (2:04:01).
