The most charitable interpretation is that Musk genuinely wants to address the problem of manipulated media on X, but has chosen a communication strategy that leaves users and observers in the dark about how it will work.
The less charitable interpretation is that this is a feature announcement designed to improve X's public image without any serious implementation backing it up.
The honest assessment is probably somewhere in between. X probably is building some kind of image labeling system. It probably will catch some manipulated images. It probably will also have false positives and false negatives. It probably won't be applied consistently across all users. And it probably won't be the solution to misinformation that Musk claims it will be.
What X needs to do is clarify. Publish standards. Explain the methodology. Commit to transparency. Build in appeals. Ensure equal enforcement. Ideally, join the C2PA or another industry standard.
Until then, Musk's "Edited visuals warning" remains what it was when he posted it: cryptic, vague, and leaving more questions than answers.
For a platform as important as X, that's not good enough.
